Markus Schulz Blog - March 6th 2009

Hey everyone!

Hello to you all once again from the plane, from 36,000 feet somewhere over Australia. Apologies for not getting the blog up on Friday as usual, but hopefully this will be some nice Sunday reading for you. I am on my way to Melbourne having spent the last few days in Perth and then Brisbane, enjoying a little bit of sunshine. I decided to sit out by the pool the otehr day, figuring that 30 mins in the sun would be pretty harmless. Unfortunately, nobody told me about the hole in the Ozone layer over Australia, I so was burnt pretty good after only 30 minutes.

This week I will talk about my experiences of Sydney and Perth, because I am sure everyone wants to know how the tour is going to far. It kicked off last Saturday in Sydney. After landing in the morning and posting up last week's blog, I rested all day. This would be the third occasion I would play at the Sublime Stage in Sydney, but the previous two occasions have occurred during the daytime. This year, I closed the show with a 3 hour set from 7pm till 10pm. The vibe is totally different at night - there is an added ambiance due to the lights and lasers.

The Sydney fans were very loud and energetic, and that made it a very fun night for me. but I must say....damn it was HOT!! Between the gig in Medellin and this gig in Sydney, I don't think I have ever sweated so much. The lights on stage, which are usually off during the daytime, were on full blast after the sun went down, and they radiated so much heat that by the end of my set I was completely drenched.

During my set, there were a couple of guys who handed me an Australian soccerroos jersey, with my name on the back of it. I thought they just wanted me to sign it to give back to them, but it turned out that they bought it specifically for me! A lovely little memento to take home with me from my Australian trip. Thank you to the guys who went to the trouble of doing that. As you can see from the picture above, a fresh and clean t-shirt was just what was needed by the end of the night.

On Sunday morning I got up early and took the plane to Perth. This day would turn out to be one of the most memorable in recent times, and I will explain why.

I suppose that no matter who you are or what you aspire to being in life, everyone has their heroes. Your favorite actor, your favorite sports personality, your favorite singer - everyone dreams that one day, they will be able to meet one of their heroes.

When I was a teenager and my musical tastes were developing, my biggest influences came from the Bronx. I mentioned last week about Larry Levan and his Paradise Garage story being a huge inspiration for me, another person who I immensely looked up to was Grandmaster Flash. My earliest DJ sets and breakdancing parties would be filled with his music. He was one of the pioneers who figured out that DJing with two turntables and a mixer was a pretty cool idea.

Actually, even before I started DJing, Grandmaster Flash was the soundtrack to many of my breakdancing battles. There are so many fond memories of whenever I heard Scorpio come on at the local roller rink I used to frequent. My friends and I would take over the middle area and do our thing.

I was very excited when I heard the news that Grandmaster Flash was also on this tour. I met him in Sydney in the artist catering area and had a little chat. I did not tell him what a hero to me he was, because I didn't want to be nerdy or freak him out. But I was completely surprised when I saw that the sets had been changed in Perth and I would be playing after Flash. I got to the stage with plenty of spare time because I wanted to watch him perform. I think what was really incredible was the sheer number of other DJs that were all hanging out watching him as well - Richie Hawtin, Sander Kleinenberg, Tocadisco, Super8 & Tab, and even Paul Oakenfold came by to catch a glimpse of the great man. I have to say, he was INCREDIBLE. I got goodbumps when he played Rapture. And when Scorpio came on, I almost cried. WOW, what an amazing moment!

10 minutes before I was to go on, it suddenly hit me....oh crap, I have to try to follow him now. What could you possibly play after he ended his set with White Lines and It's Tricky by Run DMC?

Another huge highlight was when he grabbed the mic and introduced me to the crowd. My hero brought me up on stage and introduced me to the crowd!!! AMAZING. This was a night that is going to inspire me for such a long time. I have been working on this track for my Dakota album called "Roxy 84" which is inspired by the old breakdance vibe. I can't wait to get back into the studio and finish it now.

On Tuesday, we all flew to Brisbane and had some time off. For me it was time to work on the radio shows. This week was the "Toronto 09" release special on GDJB, where I debuted some of the tracks from my new compilation. I also included some older tunes that were highlights in some of my previous compilations (Ibiza '06 and Amsterdam '08). I had a lot of fun putting the show together. It's always cool to sometimes go back and find tunes that were an integral part of your DJ sets or compilations and give them a spin once again. The key component to every compilation I have done is that when looking back, people can view it as a snapshot of how Global DJ Broadcast or my live sets sounded at that time. I will be looking forward to reading the reviews of the Toronto CD on the message boards over the coming weeks. A lot of you will probably find yourselves listening to the first half of Disc 1 in a loop on recovery Sundays.

Some of the tracks I have been testing out in my live sets. For instance, The Sound of Flight track sounded amazing in Medellin, and the crowd were going absolutely crazy for it. Mr. Pit's tune Besides Words completely ripped the soundsystem at Ministry of Sound in London, and Tim Grube's remix of Tenishia's Everything was one of the closing tracks in the final half hour of my 6 hour set at Pacha in New York. A few of you were sending emails during the week asking if there would be an unmixed digital package for Toronto '09. I can confirm that there will indeed be one, I think it'll have around 10 of the tracks and it's coming out in a couple of weeks. Any tracks that aren't included in that package will get fully released with remixes on Coldharbour.

This weekend is a hectic one for sure. Last night the tour recommenced in Brisbane and continues later today in Melbourne. We will be landing soon and immediately after checking in to the hotel, I'll be heading straight to Queensbridge to setup the equipment to record my set for the next World Tour show. I'm playing a 3 hour set at the Future Music Festival itself, and then a 4 hour set at the afterparty. Finally, we bring the FMF series to a close tomorrow (Monday), with the final leg in Adelaide.

Next week, I'll check in with you guys from Barcelona. I will spend some time giving an overall review of my Australian experience and the entire Future Music Festivals, along with looking forward to a night in Catalonia, and also a quick return to Ireland and a big night at Lush in Portrush, which will be my first gig there in nearly 4 years.

Until then, take care and hope you all having a great weekend.

G'day,
Markus

Markus Schulz Blog - February 27th 2009

Hey everyone,

Hello to you all from the plane this week; and crutch-free too! I set off on Wednesday from Miami to take the long trip to Sydney, via an overnight stay in Los Angeles. When I land, my first mission will be to get adjusted to the time difference as quickly as possible and fight off the inevitable jetlag. But I must say, I really can't believe how quickly time has flown by. It definitely doesn't seem like it was exactly one year ago when I was last in Australia.

As you know, last Friday I was in NYC doing a little side project. I was responsible for arranging the music at Chado Ralph Rucci's fashion show, as part of NYC's Fashion Week. It was very different for me to create music for walking instead of dancing. Fashion TV was there filming as well as a herd of snobby fashion reviewers with pen and paper in hand. I could only imagine the stress if while I was playing at a big gig, the entire audience had a pen and paper and wrote something after every track I play Come to think of it though, most tranceaddicts do that anyways with their cellphones!

After the Rucci show, I had some meetings to go to and then some shopping. I have this thing lately with old 70's and 80's NYC dance music. So I went looking for some old Loft CDs as well as some old Larry Levan mixes. On many occasions, I have been asked in interviews to name one or two people who I would describe as my biggest inspiration to pursue a career in this industry. Larry Levan was who I looked up to when I started DJing. I never heard him play live, but the stories I heard about how he worked the room and his sets inspired me greatly. Another one of my heroes, Danny Tenaglia, was also inspired by Larry Levan, so there was definitely something handed down from his years behind the decks of The Paradise Garage.

After a nice dinner in NYC, I decided to hit the clubs. It is not often that I have a night off in a city like New York. So why not head back to the scene of one of my best gigs in recent times, and head to Pacha. Jono and Paavo from Above & Beyond were playing. The guys are currently in the middle of their Anjunadeep tour, so it was a perfect time to check out some cool deeper music. It was incredibly fun being there in a clubbing capacity, and having the chance to hang out with some of the tranceaddicts that came to see me at the club last month.

On Saturday morning, I left New York and took the long flight down south to Medellin in Colombia. This was a gig I was really looking forward to, because my appearance at the Summer Dance Festival in Cartagena was cancelled back in early January. The Colmbians did not disappoint.

The club was packed and it was hot. I mean really hot. The combination of all the lights on the stage, as well as the heat from the equipment and the non-stop energy from the crowd, I was soaked by the end of my set. I don't even sweat that much when I go to the gym or play basketball.

For me, the most impressive thing about the night was the crowd. They were so full of passion. There were no fights, no problems at all - just a great night of clubbing. Colombia gets such a bad rep from their past history, but I am telling you, if you ever get an opportunity to go there, you should grab it with both hands. It is a beautiful country with very nice people. I also discovered my new favorite fruit while I was there - Grenadilla. I asked Alexandra, who was taking care of me for this gig, to stop at a local market and pick up a bag of them for me. I finished them off before I left the next morning.

The drive from the city of Medellin to the airport is insane! You go straight up into the mountains, where you drive past waterfalls and huge cliffs. A stunning view, and a time where I was so sorry that I did not have my camera with me.

I got back to Miami late Sunday night, and started packing / preparing for 3 weeks away from home.

Monday and Tuesday were spent around the studio preparing as best as possible for the next couple of weeks on the road. The hard part for me is going to be the inability to lock myself in the studio during this time. But the flipside to that is, I can develop a lot of ideas in my head and get a framework for a track started. You may have noticed a trend with the names of some of the Dakota tracks I have made for the new album - Day Off in Lima was exactly that, I came up with the idea for it the day following my gig at Creamfields in Peru in November, and Sin City, which obviously was inspired from my last visit to Las Vegas in January.

I recorded all the liners for the next three Global DJ Broadcast shows (including yesterday's), because when you are doing the show away from home, you can't always guarantee that the microphone you use will give the best audio quality. That explains why my voice sometimes sounds a little different on the show from week to week.

We have a couple of really exciting Global DJ Broadcast shows over the next couple of weeks. Next Thursday, we will have a Toronto '09 release special, to celebrate the release of my latest compilation. I'm going to pick around 5 tracks that have not been played by anyone on radio before and give them their world premiere. The hard task will be choosing which 5! The majority of what you see on both CDs forms the Coldharbour Recordings schedule from now until the summertime. So hopefully there will be a few gems in there for people to enjoy.

Normally, the first Global DJ Broadcast of every month would feature the World Tour. But because of wanting to fit in the Toronto '09 Release Special, along with how my tour schedule worked out, we are temporarily moving the World Tour to the second show for March, when it will air on the 12th. I really wanted to represent Australia in the World Tour series this year, because of all the great memories from the Future Music Festival last year, and also, I wanted to record a set that will have the least amount of time transpiring before it airs on the radio, therefore keeping it fresh. So the recording will take place at the FMF Afterparty at Queensbridge in Melbourne on the 8th. It is a holiday weekend in the state of Victoria, so I am hoping that plenty of people are going to come out and make plenty of noise. This is their chance to show the world what Australian clubbing is all about!

During my flight to Sydney, I have been putting my answers together with your questions that you have posted over at my forum. Thanks again to everyone who takes the effort to come up with such interesting questions on a variety of things.

Here is this month's batch:

Does the Trinidad To Miami track have any special meaning behind the name? What does Trinidad mean to you?

That track I made on a flight home from a gig in Trinidad. It was a really cool gig and I wound up playing some really progressive tunes at the end of my set. I remember that I had just enough time to go to the hotel and get my bags and go to the airport after my set. So you can imagine I was still feeling the vibe when I boarded. The combination of the great crowd and vibe inspired me to create that on my flight home.

Like you, I've been using the HDJ-1000 since a long time now. 2 months ago, Pioneer revealed their new HDJ-2000 which look a lot different than the HDJ-1000. Are you going to upgrade or will you just stay with the HDJ-1000?

They just sent me the new HDJ-2000 to try out but it arrived the day after I left. when I get back home from this long tour I will try them first in the studio and then at a live gig. I will let you know how that goes.

I always love the flow of your live sets, so I wanted to know, when you're playing live, how far ahead do you think on what track you're going to play next? Do you just wing it from song to song? Or do you think of the next few songs you're going to play before you play them?

For me it is all about how you organize your music, so that you can be creative and spontaneous but in an organized way. I organize my music by the part of my set I would normally play a tune (early part of my set goes in the front of my CD book and the latter part of my set in the back) Within that I organize the tracks by harmonic key and BPM so that I can see easily which tracks will go well together.

Markus, according to your tour schedule you will almost a week between your gigs in Perth and Brisbane. Other than anything to do with music, do you plan on taking some time to explore the cities? You have been here twice before on tour so are there any favorite things you've experienced here before which you would like to do again?

Yes we usually take some tours or side trips when we have time off in Australia. I do not know yet where I will be going, but I hope to see some kangaroos and Koala bears.

How do you spend your time on a long flight e.g. from Europe to the US?

Sleeping or working. It is great because most airlines have power plugs in the seat nowdays so you can work the entire 8 hours. I also spend time gathering my thoughts and working towards the weekly blogs. :)

In April, you are going to play alongside Armin, Above & Beyond and DJ Shah in Montreal at Bal en Blanc... Because all of you usually play a few of the same songs in your sets, what do you do to avoid a track from being repeated?

That is a problem, but you try to be sensitive to each other person you play with. The number one rule is to not play anything that they have made or that is on their label. If we all play a track that is on a different label, well that happens but you try to respect each others' library. Of course whenever Armin and I play together, we usually spend a few minutes asking each other what tunes have already been played that may be on the playlist of the other.

Please keep your questions coming over at the forum. We have a great community building there right now, and I would like you to be part of it if you aren't already. I will answer another set of questions in the last blog next month.

he Future Music Festival is actually quite unique in its concept. It is almost the same lineup for every one of the events in the five cities across Australia. And the really cool thing is, all the DJs travel together throughout the 10 day period. You get to meet a lot of great people and share some interesting and intriguing stories with them. Also, because you are not jetting off to another country right away, it gives the opportunity to check out what other DJs are playing and mingle backstage. By the end of the tour, there is a real sense of bonding and friendship.

This Saturday, the first of the FMF series takes place in Sydney. On Sunday, we fly west to the Gold Coast, for the second FMF in Perth. I will stay west during the week, before playing at Brisbane the following Saturday, then returning east for a big day in Melbourne on Sunday, and finishing up with Adelaide on the Monday.

'm so excited for this tour to begin. When I was at LAX yesterday morning before boarding my flight, I took a browse on the inthemix website and forum, which houses a lot of the Australian fans, and I can tell how enthusiastic they are ahead of these festivals. I'm going to try my very best and put on a great show for you all. I hope to see you there!

Next week, I'll check in with you guys to reflect on the events in Sydney and Perth, and look forward to the rest of the FMF shows, as well as the World Tour.

So have a great weekend, and I hope you enjoy the GDJB Toronto '09 Release Special next Thursday.

G'day,
Markus

Markus Schulz on BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix in December

Image

Since October 1993, the UK's biggest radio station, BBC Radio 1, has invited the world's greatest DJs to showcase their talents in the award winning amd much heralded Essential Mix.

The importance of an appearance on the Essential Mix cannot be understated. For many DJs, it has defined their career. For others, it has been the launchpad to establishing a place in dance music folklore.

On Friday December 5th, the honour will be bestowed upon none other than Markus Schulz.

Naturally, Markus is delighted with the news. "It's a wonderful honor to be asked," says Markus. "For so many fans around the world, they get their first real exposure to dance music through the reputation of the Essential Mix."

"When I visited the Radio 1 studios a few weeks ago to do the show with Judge Jules, you could feel a special atmosphere just by looking at pictures of the DJs who have been there and featured heavily on the EM over the years. It makes me feel nervous, but very excited at the same time."

Markus has appeared on the Essential Mix once before, as part of a live broadcast from the Planetlove Festival in Ireland in 2007. However, this will be the first opportunity for Markus to perforn a studio edition.

So what can we expect from a Markus Schulz Essential Mix? "Well, I can tell you that I already have a brand new remix of my own tucked away until that set. My primary focus over the next few weeks will be working on the Essential Mix. I hope I can be as creative as possible and provide something that the listeners are going to be talking about for some time to come."

Be sure to tune in to BBC Radio 1 on Friday night / Saturday morning, at 10pm Eastern / 3am GMT / 4am Central European Time on December 5th.

The world will be listening.

Markus Schulz Blog - Nov 07 2008

Hey everyone!

Hope you are all well wherever you are and what you are doing. It has been a significant period of time in the world so I want to take some time and reflect in writing over what has happened this past week. I am currently writing to you from Madrid airport, just getting off the red-eye flight from Miami. A bit jaded, but in good spirits overall; and looking forward very much to this weekend.

When I signed off last Friday I was on my way to San Juan in Puerto Rico for my weekend gig. It was definitely a new experience! I was nervous preparing for the gig because you really did not know what to expect from the crowd. I think overall it went well, but it gave me a lot of food for thought in terms of preparing for the unknown.

After San Juan I had the rare luxury of spending a Saturday night at home in Miami. Unfortunately, all the travelling of the past week... Los Angeles - Miami - London - Miami - San Juan - Miami... really began catching up with me physically. So the rest of the weekend was spent in full chill mode - went to the gym, ate well, and watched some sports including the Dolphins game, which we won! Who would have thought we would have won 4 times the amount of games we won last season by now? They are a good young team, and definitely on the way up.

Monday was the beginning of a very busy week, and I knew well in advance that due to what would occur on Tuesday, that I was going to have to lock myself into the studio for many hours.

This weekend is a massive one for me personally - returning to Sofia for the first time in almost two years to play at a beautiful club called Yalta on Friday, and playing at one of the marquee events in the world on Saturday in Prague, Transmission.

Most of you will already know that the theme for this year's Transmission is "The New World". Back in March, the organisers for the event contacted me and asked if I could compose a special theme for the night. While I felt incredibly honored, I knew that this was going to be a big challenge for me in the studio.

If you think back to all the internationally renowned events, such as Sensation White or Trance Energy, they have always picked iconic tracks as their themes that have stood the test of time and remain anthems today. Not only that, you have to take into account the significant factors of playing in an arena or festival type setting. You need bigger riffs, punchier basslines, and produce a vibe which the person sitting in the nosebleed seats or standing at the back of a tent is going to feel as much as a person standing at the front of the stage.

Looking back at the nights in the studio working on The New World, it was definitely my previous experiences of playing at Transmission which helped me visualize how the track needed to sound. The feeling I get once you get on stage, seeing literally a sea of people in front of you, accompanied with all the visuals and production techniques that Transmission is known for, is really inspirational.

A lot of people have been sending me emails or asking on the forum about The New World and when it is coming out. My Progression Progressed album, which features all the huge remixes of my tracks over the past year, was released digitally last Monday. The original of The New World is on there, so you should be able to grab it though all the download portals. I think the album itself was a very rewarding project. I was very pleased with how all the additional remixes turned out, and I think everyone will find something on there that they can enjoy and appreciate. Of course I also have the Return To Coldharbour Remxi of the track, which has been getting huge reactions at all my gigs over the past couple of weeks, and the good news I can tell you is that you will not have to wait very long for its release. More details about that to come next week.

Seeing the release of the remix album felt like one of those chapters in your life that is about to be closed, and another one is about to begin. The same can be said for the United States, where of course we had our Election day on Tuesday, to decide a new president for the next four years.

I got up at 6am on Tuesday morning to go to the voting polls, and stood for 2 hours in line! When I heard the news of this election being the biggest in terms of voting turnout, I was not surprised. Come evening time, we invited some friends over, ordered some Chinese food, and had a nice little get-together until 2am as we watched the results of the exit polls coming in. To me it felt like we were celebrating New Year's Eve, only it was at the beginning of November.

I think the result was what citizens of the world were hoping for. It has been a very difficult time for all of us in recent years, particularly with everyone feeling the effects of the downturn in the economic climate recently. I feel that we now have a person in President Obama that we can believe in, and who can give us all hope for the future. When I was staying at my apartment in Berlin during the summer, I picked up a newspaper and the headline read, "Barack Obama - can he be a leader not just for the United States of America, but also a leader of the world." That moment has stuck with me ever since, it gave me goosebumps.

It really is going to be a new world, a new vision, and a future that I can honestly say I am looking forward to already.

Wednesday night was spent making Evolution and getting the Global DJ Broadcast World Tour show edited and finalized. The night at White Angel in Budapest was amazing, and when listening back to the recording, it made me appreciate even more how incredibly hot the crowd were on the night. Hopefully you guys enjoyed listening to the latest chapter of my worldwide travels, and thank you to everyone in Budapest for making it one of the best GDJB World Tour stops to date.

Today I feature as the guest on Above & Beyond's Trance Around The World radio show, where I will be doing a 30 minute guest mix. You will be able to find details of how to tune in and the tracklist on my forum. I take a flight from Madrid to Sofia in 1 hour, play at Yalta tonight, then travel to Prague on Saturday to play at Transmission, which is held at the O2 Arena. I played in the venue back in May for the Prague edition of Sensation White, so I know exactly what to expect in terms of atmosphere. After Prague, it is straight back to Miami, where another week will begin.

So it's time to sign off again. I see a smoothie bar beside one of the checkin desks so time to grab a strawberry & banana combo, and start getting ready for Sofia. I have been looking forward to this weekend for so long, and now that it's here, I can't wait to experience it.

Take care and see you next week!

Ciao,
Markus

Release Label: Coldharbour Recordings
Release Code: CLHR057
Release Date: November 3rd 2008

Transparent (Original Mix)
Transparent (Dub Mix)
Transparent (Jody Wisternoff Remix)
Transparent (Jody Wisternoff Dub Mix)
Transparent (Tritonal's Air Up There Remix)

Swedish duo Andrelli & Blue, alongside vocalist Hila, made quite an impression on listeners in the beginning of 2008 with their debut release "Imagine". Returning with a distinctly smooth and sexy flavour is their debut release for Coldharbour Recordings, entitled "Transparent".

The original was deemed as one of the outstanding inclusions on Markus Schulz's Hypnotic compilation CD for Armani Exchange, and also received support early on from Armin van Buuren on his A State Of Trance radio show.

Having already established themselves as firm Coldharbour favourites, Texan duo Tritonal deliver their Air Up There perspective on Transparent, and the results have been given firm approval by the fans, as it has become one of Markus Schulz's most requested tracks on Global DJ Broadcast and Evolution over the past three months.

Wrapping up the package is a remix by the much heralded and respected Jody Wisternoff of Way Out West fame, who offers a more downtempo offering, but will appeal to fans of his unhibited and unique style.

Dub versions of the original and Jody's mix are also available to purchase.

The weather may be getting colder, but Transparent will doubtlessly bring back memories of lush and fresh summertime.
